History of the Barracks

The story of this site stretches back more than a century. Built in 1919, in the years following the First World War, the Old Port Edgar Barracks has worn many guises. Over the decades it served as a training centre for British and Allied servicemen preparing for the Normandy landings, a minesweeping training base, a holiday camp for those out of work, and even a storage depot for materials during the building of the Forth Road Bridge.

Today, that rich and varied past is being given a new chapter. The careful conversion of these historic naval buildings into The Barracks honours their character and heritage while creating distinctive, individually designed homes for a new generation to enjoy. It's a place where the stories of the past are woven gently into everyday life and where every home carries a little of its history with it.

The Barracks has welcomed many visitors as the development takes shape. The start of construction was marked by a special laying of reclaimed bricks by Dorothea Barron, a World War II veteran and former WREN, a fitting nod to the site’s naval roots. We have since opened our gates for Doors Open Days Edinburgh, hosted a local youth group, and shared regular updates as the historic Officers’ Mess and surrounding buildings are sympathetically restored.
